14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
When we think about living as Christ, Christians are quick to quote all kinds of scriptures. From saying that we need to help the poor, to do good deeds, to giving our tithes and offerings, to even praying for the sick and demon oppressed to be free. All those answers are correct, but they are only pieces of the true purpose that Christ was expounding upon in the above verses.
Are you a light everywhere you go? When you are at work, can your co-workers go to you for spiritual advice or counsel? What about when your online, do people only see the latest funny meme you shared or do they see some kind of authority in your knowledge of scripture? How will people know that you are even Christian if it’s never reflected in your daily life?
We need to walk and talk like Christ no matter where we are. I’m not saying that everything you say and do needs to end with an “amen!” or wear a “Jesus Loves You” t-shirt. The point is that as followers of Christ, our actions, words, relationships and habits should reflect our Master and Heavenly Father at work, online, with our relationships, in our emotions and even our words.
Many people will not receive your words or biblical verses because the fact is, at that moment, they could care less. Yet, when that person is dealing with something serious or they need an answer, they will come to you because they know your the “Christian guru”. That’s how you can live as Christ every day. Seek new ways to serve and honor Him daily as you live this life.
Listed below are three practical ways you can live as a Christian and show others that you are not a lamp under a basket:
- Pay attention and give a wise word when your part of a conversation that steers to the religious side of things. Most people don’t even know that some sayings aren’t biblical, and will say all sorts of things without any knowledge, so use that as a chance to share the love of God with them and give advice on their situation or question.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to help you control any negative emotions you have trouble with. Whether it’s anger, jealousy or even nagging too much, daily take time to realize when an outburst is coming on and ask for peace.
- Enjoy life! Don’t be seen as the boring guy/girl who won’t have fun because “the bible says so”. There’s so many great experiences that don’t involve alcohol, sex or drugs. Show others that a relationship with Christ is the best way to spend every day without having to live in sin.
