I have three boys and a daughter. God has used each of my kids to teach me things about myself and about a loving God. I don’t think children are for everyone, clearly some people should not consider reproducing but I will say that a full quiver is truly a blessing from God.
I understood Samuel being called by the Lord in the night. I understood the feeling of having to be ready at all hours of the night for the call of God just like a child would cry out in sleep. Sleeping without slumber, ready for the call.
With my daughter I am learning about expectations. I am realizing that expectations of sleep are often thwarted by a baby who changes her mind suddenly. I realize that I can’t expect to do the things as easily as I was able to before. With my sons being somewhat grown up we were able to do what we wanted to most of the time. With the exception of being on time, we had a well oiled machine. Not with an infant.
I am seeing that my well laid plans are often thwarted by a God who has bigger and better ideas. When I say better I don’t always mean selfishly better, because sometimes what God knows to be better is much harder and oftentimes frustrating to the flesh. Just when things start to be comfortable God shakes them up, and I’m grateful for that.
God’s blessings are always what He knows best and it’s tiring arguing this fact to people who believe that God’s blessings are always financial or medical. An upgrade to first class on an airplane may be nice, but it may not always be God’s blessing upon you. I tire of the idea that as Christians we have some magic favor from God over others. Or the idea that one person who is in Christ has more favor than another. God’s rain falls on the just and the unjust.
What can I expect from God then? Well, I can expect His will over mine. Joshua 20:14 says – “Not one word has failed of all the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.”
1 John 2:25 “And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life.
Ezekiel 36:26 “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”
Psalm 103:12 “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
