Usually when I write something regarding a fandom it causes people to get upset. It seems like it’s unavoidable. So I will do my best to do this topic justice and explain why I think that the character of Harley Quinn (made famous as sidekick for The Joker) is beloved and sexualized because our total sinful depravity.
A little bit of background before I go into detail. Harley Quinn first appeared in a cartoon called Batman: The Animated Series. She was dressed as a jester and was infatuated with The Joker. She carries with her a strong Jersey accent and is typically bubbly and clinically insane. Her devotion to The Joker has been used by many to speak out against domestic violence, as we learn later that The Joker manipulated Dr. Harleen Quinzel (Harley’s full name) while under psychiatric care at Arkham Asylum.
Harley is cute, crazy and totally devoted to The Joker. For serious fans, the fullness of abuse toward Harley can be seen in the comic series Batman: Haley Quinn. There we see full on abuse toward Harley from The Joker.
Ever since Batman: The Animated Series we have seen a slow moral decline in the outfits that Harley is drawn into, leading us to the Harley we see in Suicide Squad played by the beautiful Margot Robbie.
Now, I am not speaking to all people when I make general statements here, so please, consider I could be generalizing and not speaking about you. Men love Harley because she is a sexual automaton. Not only is she cute, bubbly and twisted, but she is insanely devoted to a sociopath. No matter the treatment he gives us, she comes back. Our sexual depravity craves that, and if you don’t believe me do some research into the state of pornography today vs. 20 years ago.
What we would consider “soft core” porn today, is actually what was considered hardcore back then. Not only is there no love in any pornography but the gratuitous violence and abuse that is displayed in the most popular of videos would have caused heart attacks in the most vile of perverts 20 years ago. Hence why we see Harley, looking the way she is today.
It wasn’t enough to keep this object of sociopathic domestic abuse fully clothed, but in order to keep our loins satisfied we made her more sexual. Now she wears little clothing, has larger features and submits without question to her sexual and emotional abuser. We allowed Harley Quinn to happen, our depravity, our desire for more sin, more shame, more damage.
We can make claims that she is a complicated character and that is why we are drawn to her, but we are fooling ourselves if we fail to recognize our sinful sexual decline. We want Harley because she would want us, without question, without objection and we put ourselves in the shoes of The Joker. Harley Quinn is Sexual Depravity.
