“I’m not talking about abortion, I’m talking about the almost obsessive zeal for abortion that goes beyond all measure of reason and strangles all discussion with screeching and violence. It is a love of abortion that exceeds all natural human instinct because abortion means something; something dark and malevolent that speaks of the power to destroy a human life of our own creation, the produce of our own flesh, and the image of God.” – Chris Neiswonger
With the recent March for Life and the proceeded Women’s March, the topic of abortion has been on the forefront of social media and culture. More so than it has ever been before. Our own Vice President Mike Pence was asked to speak at the March for Life rally which was a first for any VP in our history. President Trump has even reinstated the Mexico City Act which defunds International Planned Parenthood. It seems that this topic will not be going away anytime soon.
Reaching back to the quote I posted at the beginning of this article, there is nothing more true than the statement being made. The argument for abortion isn’t even about abortion anymore. The zeal and passion from the pro-choice movement isn’t even arguing for a woman’s right to choose how to take care of her own body. On that front most people actually agree. Plenty of pro-lifers are happy to admit we want women to have a right to take care of their own body. The issue isn’t about their body anymore, it’s about the body inside of them.
If this were about a right to choose how to take care of self, and was obviously so then maybe we could have a common ground to start with discussion, but the central theme to the pro-choice argument is the choice to kill a child in the womb of the mother. It’s not about health care, it’s not about contraceptives or mammograms. It’s about the mother’s right to decide to kill her child.
This evidence is seen in every pro-choice argument. During the rally, key speakers were wearing shirts that said things like “I love abortion” etc… You can’t convince anyone that you want more for women’s reproductive rights when you are championing a specific act. I would even go so far to say that the pro-abortion platform is grounded in the desire for guilt-free sexual immorality.
Even the arguments used that would be the most credible in the case of a medical reason for an abortion are at such a low percentage that it becomes a negligible argument. And negligible even, the argument is still absurd. There is no good reason to terminate the life of a child for the instance of whether it’s wanted or not. Aside from the tragedy of termination due to ectopic pregnancy, every other argument is for the sake of the convenience of the mother.
The bottom line is this, we as believers and pro-life advocates need to be equipped and prepared to answer the questions posed to us by pro-choice advocates. We need to speak informed and eloquently to their objections and let that speak to the truth of the situation. We won’t always win someone over, because the zeal to slay children has reached biblical proportions. But we can speak truth in love to the people who are deceived by a plethora of lies in the name of science.
